MUSTARD SEED FAITH

By Carolyn Dale Newell

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move;

and nothing will be impossible for you.”

Matthew 17:20 NKJV

Do you ever feel like you’re with the disciples in the “O ye of little faith” club? When trouble comes, our faith often scampers away like my cat during a thunderstorm. Fear, worry and doubt begin to take over. Isn’t it comforting to knows Jesus said we only need small faith – faith the size of a mustard seed to move mountains?

“Mountain moving” was a familiar cliché for the Israelites which described the impossible trials we often face. Some health conditions are mountain moving. Some family problems are mountain moving. Some job issues are mountain moving. But all things are possible with God (Matt. 19:26).

The mustard seed was one of the tiniest seeds in Jesus’ day. However, it had one special characteristic. That myopic seed would grow into a huge plant, almost the size of a tree. Our faith is just like that seed. As we go through each trial, each battle, and each hurdle, our faith grows.

Jesus said, “Have faith in God (Mark 11:22). Faith is simply trusting God. Our loving Father wants only the best for us. His best. That isn’t always our idea of best, but His power and authority can move any mountain.

Imagine your faith is the cord on one of your small appliances. That cord is powerless without electricity, but once you plug it in, it has made the connection with the source of power.

That occurs when we pray. We are coming in contact with the ultimate power source, God.

Yes, our faith will grow just like that mustard seed. As it grows, we will see fear and doubt take flight. Where there is faith, fear, worry and doubt cannot exist.

Examine your faith today. Is it genuine? Do you have a personal relationship with God? Do you wholeheartedly believe He can move mountains? Now, act in faith. Live like you believe.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us faith, hearing our prayers, and answering according to Your will. Strengthen our faith so that we may trust You completely. Amen.

HIKING THE TRAIL

I love the acrostic for “faith” – “For All I Trust Him”. As a young Christian, I had trouble completely trusting God with my husband’s leukemia, but thanks to God that mountain moved. Is there something you are struggling with today? Please leave a comment. I would love to pray for you.
