Who have been upheld by Me from birth, Who have been carried from the womb:  Even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you!  I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.    –Is. 46:3b-4

What a wonderful promise!  God is comparing Himself against the idols in verses 1-2 which bow down and stoop.  They cannot sustain you like God does.  However, in verses 3-4, God speaks directly to Israel and also to Christians.

Our idols today are not carved images.  Our idols are money, jobs, relationships, health, property…  Naturally, when we lose one of these, we become anxious, but if you are trusting in them rather than God and it is snatched away, then you are devastated.  Any of these things can be taken within a day.  All it takes is a phone call from the doctor, a company shutting down and laying off, an unexpected expense, or a death and they are gone.  God is still there.

God made you, carried you from the womb, and He will carry you to old age.  He will carry you through the two most vulnerable times of your life, infancy and old age.  He will carry you and deliver you through the disappointments, the losses, the illnesses, and every impossible situation.

Don’t place your trust in money, jobs, or health, which can be gone in an instant.  Place your trust in God’s sustaining power. When you trust God, the loss of these other things will not be as hard on you.   Thank God for these blessings now, and thank Him for sustaining you when they are gone.
