praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— (Ephesians 6:18 NKJV)

The Bible tells us to put on the armor of God. The above verse follows the six pieces of armor, and it tells us how to put on the armor – through prayer. We pray with authority when we pray the Word of God back to God. We are in line with His will when we do this and it sets our minds on the proper focus while we battle in spiritual warfare.

How do we select verses for each piece of armor? Glad you asked, because that’s what we’re doing today.

Belt of truth

Every verse from God’s Word is truth, so you can’t go wrong with this, but we want to choose a verse that removes the lie of the enemy. The belt held everything together on a Roman soldier. The sword hung on the belt and the breastplate attached to it. I selected the following verse because it tells us we are too worthy to worry.

Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? (Matthew 6:26 CSB)

Breastplate of righteousness

The breastplate protected the major organs, including the heart, the seat of our emotions. You can see the importance of guarding the heart when we prepare a battle prayer against worry.

Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7 CSB

CSB)

Shoes of peace

The Roman soldier’s shoes were almost like cleats, so he could stand firm in battle. We want a verse about peace. That’s why we can use the above verses from Philippians 4:6-7 for the shoes of peace.

Helmet of salvation

The helmet guards the mind, and as you can guess, we are using the same verses from Philippians once again. This is a passage I often use to fill out these three pieces of armor.

Shield of faith

The shield is used to quench the fiery darts of the evil one. Indians used to shoot arrows with fire into the covered wagons of early westward settlers. Now instead of fighting Indians, the settlers had to also fight the fire. Only our faith can do that. A pure confidence in Almighty God. When we believe the following promise, it should give us the faith to hush our worried minds.

And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19 CSB)

Sword of Spirit

This is our only defensive weapon with which we can wield against the enemy. I selected this verse to remind me of God’s comfort and joy and to tell Satan that I am filled with God’s comfort and joy, not worry.

When I am filled with cares, your comfort brings me joy. (Psalm 94:19 CSB)

Please choose the verses that help you most. These are only examples. I am praying for you as you become victorious in your war on worry. It’s an ongoing battle, but never give up. I believe in you, and I know you can do it.
