Will God Provide?

And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Genesis 22:14 NKJV

I did the math again. A personal loan would cover the expensive hearing aids, but as soon as we paid it off, it would be time for a new pair. We cannot live under that kind of financial strain for the rest of my life.

God, You have to do something! The doctors say they can do nothing else to restore my hearing, but You can heal. I trust You for healing as well as my provision, but You have to open a door.

Do you ever find yourself in a place where only God can meet your needs? God is Jehovah Jireh, “The-Lord-Will-Provide.” God commanded Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his only son (Genesis 22:1-2). Like most trials, this one didn’t make sense. God had never required a human sacrifice. It contradicted His nature. Why would God take Abraham’s son of old age, especially when God had promised to make Abraham the father of many nations?

Let’s look at how Abraham handled this gut-wrenching request. Not once during the three-day journey did he question God. Abraham knew God as Jehovah Jireh. Abraham believed God would resurrect Isaac, even though he had never witnessed a resurrection (Hebrews 11:17-19). Abraham even told his servants that he and Isaac would both return from the mountain. Abraham possessed amazingly strong faith.

When Isaac questioned his dad about the lamb for the sacrifice, Abraham responded by assuring Isaac, and himself, God would provide a lamb. At the last moment, as Abraham raised the knife to slay his son, God stopped him. God did exactly what Abraham had told Isaac. He provided a ram for the sacrifice.

Abraham obeyed God at all cost, even to the point of sacrificing his son. God blessed Abraham’s obedience and faith by promising him descendants more numerous than the stars (Genesis 22:18). Obedience always precedes blessing.

During our lifetimes, we will endure God’s testing. Like Abraham, we must heed God’s Word and trust Jehovah Jireh. He will provide! When the checking account falls short, He will provide. When you’re forced to choose between paying bills and purchasing food, He will provide. When you face insurmountable medical bills, He will provide. He may not move the mountain, but God will provide, just as He did for Abraham.

Why do we waste sleepless nights, tossing and turning? We have God’s promise:

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19)

If you were the son or daughter of royalty, would you have any concerns about your needs being met? No, because you’re in the king’s family. Friend, you are in the King’s family. King Jesus! Claim God’s promises and pray them every time you are tempted to fret. Remember who you are and whose you are.

Heavenly Father, we desire the faith of Abraham. Help us call on You, Jehovah Jireh with child-like faith. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
