Throwback Thursday: Vanity

Just as many were astonished at You, so His visage was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men; – Isaiah 52:14

This verse is from Isaiah’s Messianic prophecy. It foretells of the horrors Jesus Christ endured prior to His sacrificial death on the cross. “ Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands,” (Matt. 26:67).

The term visage refers to His face and form refers to His body. His numerous raw wounds made Him humanly unrecognizable. We should remember our Lord’s humiliation.

We live in a world consumed with physical appearance. We cringe at every extra pound, wrinkle, age spot and scar. We are often intimidated when our corrupt flesh fails and we must use glasses,a cane, wheelchair or some other medical device to aid us in our daily activities.

What did our Lord Jesus Christ look like while he was hanging on that cross? A mass of blood and raw flesh. He was there to save us from eternal damnation. He was never concerned about His appearance, but His only concern was to do His Father’s will by taking the punishment we deserved in order that we may be saved. That should be our concern also. O Lord, deliver us from vanity!
