“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”
(Matthew 5:13 NKJV)
My cousin, Eddie, told me that it is definitely possible to lead a horse to water, and yes, you can even make him drink. Salt increases thirst, so you mix 1 teaspoon of salt with two tablespoons of apple sauce. Use a syringe and squirt the mixture on the back of the horse’s tongue. The salt increases the horse’s thirst.
Christians are the salt of the earth, but our salt cannot stay in the shaker. We have to sprinkle our salt around. Salt is still a preservative, but at the time Jesus preached His Sermon on the Mount, there were no refrigerators. Salt was the primary way to prevent meat from spoiling. Likewise, Christians are a spiritual preservative. Our saltiness should slow down the spiritual and moral decay in this world.
According to Warren Weirsbe, salt is also a purifier, acting as an antiseptic that cleanses and kills infection. *
So, what’s wrong with the world? Why do we see moral decline even in the church? We’ve lost our flavor. Not all believers, but quite a few.
Jesus said in our focal verse that when salt loses its flavor, it is useless. In His time, it was thrown into the street to be trampled on by men. Today, salt no longer loses its flavor. Sadly, many Christians and even preachers have lost their flavor. Some just keep their salt in the shaker, afraid to be a witness of God’s truth.
How do Christians lose their flavor? False doctrines will definitely absorb the flavor out of a Christian. Watering down the Bible’s truth waters down the flavor of salt. Sin chases the salt’s flavor away.
It’s up to every single saint of God to sprinkle their favorable salt among those surrounding them. It isn’t just a job for preachers, teachers, and evangelists. A greater judgement awaits preachers and pastors who have lost their flavor. They will have to answer to God.
Church should be the most uncomfortable place for sinners.
How can sinners return week after week to a church? Either the preacher isn’t delivering the whole truth of God or the sinners have been appeased with false teaching.
The great thing about sprinkling others with salt is that it makes them thirsty. Just like the horse who is given salt. You can lead a horse to water, but the salt will make him drink.
Salt will create a thirst for God. It will cause us to seek after God with an unquenchable thirst for the truth.
Let’s commit to sprinkle our salt shakers violently spreading the truth since we are living in the last days. We won’t be popular, but snatching a soul from hell is worth it all.
Heavenly Father, help me sprinkle those around me with the truth. Give me tough skin because I know I am in the minority. I desire to serve You no matter what. In Jesus’ name, amen.
