For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16 NKJV)

What is it like to work with a stubborn guide dog? It’s probably not as bad as Moses leading stubborn Israelites through the wilderness.

Some days, Iva wants to take the opposite route than I do. Both routes are established, but on steamy summer mornings, I prefer the shorter one.

One morning, we crossed the street to walk in my preferred direction. Upon reaching the curb, Iva, like a strong-willed child, turned around and we returned to our initial starting point. Amused at her cute determination, I refrained from laughing. “Iva forward!” With authority in my voice, I extended my arm pointing, making it clear.

As Christians, the Bible says we have the mind of Christ, but sometimes I question my thoughts. Is that from God? Is it my own thought? How can I discern the difference? Can you relate?

I’ve discovered what works for me in these situations.  The first thing I do is seek confirmation. We don’t lack faith when we seek out the truth. Instead, it demonstrates our concern for doing the right thing.

Sometimes we need clarity when we seek God’s confirmation. I’m already on my knees more while I’m seeking His answer, but we shouldn’t wait until we need answers to have a healthy prayer life.

Pray without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17 NKJV)

Prayer should be an ongoing lifestyle, not just a quick spiritual text message.

Next, we need to internalize the Word of God. Like prayer, we can’t wait until we realize we need an answer from God to begin spending time in the Bible. Christians mature because they dig into God’s love letter. The Bible is alive with information that transforms.

Finally, we need to concentrate on God’s voice. You might wonder how we can accomplish that. Removing physical distractions such as food. Fasting combined with praying clears the mind and helps us focus on God.

When we act on our thoughts, we will be met with opposition and oppression. I made Iva retrace her steps when she tried to walk in the opposite direction than what I had directed her. Some of our circumstances are products of our own choices. God won’t force us to do His will, but life gets tough when we follow our own deceitful hearts (Jer. 17:9).

Clearly, we can’t wait until we have a crucial decision to make. We must commit to an intentional healthy prayer life now. We also must digest God’s Word. What is one way you can take a step in the right direction today?
