The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.
Proverbs 18:10 NKJV
Iva raced across the freshly mown grass. Her black coat glistened in the sun. She slammed on the brakes assuming the perfect “sit” pose right at my husband’s feet. She stared intently at his face. Then she glanced back to the bush buzzing with June bugs where she had been sniffing around. Her gaze returned to her daddy. If Iva could speak, she would have said, “Daddy, make them stop! They’re attacking me when I play near the bush. Make them leave.”
Iva knew to run to her father for help, like a child when he falls off his bike with scuffed-up knees. Once upon a time, we possessed that child-like faith, believing our parents could right every wrong. They could fix everything in our world. Then we grew up. Our earthly fathers could no longer make everything better for us. But isn’t it comforting to know we have a heavenly Father we can run to?
Anytime, day or night. No matter where we are, He is always available. Always accessible. When our world gets rocked, we can go to Him. We can seek His help when finances fizzle. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Ps. 50:10-11). God is our provider (Phil. 4:19). He is our Great Physician when we are sick. He is our counselor when we need guidance and direction. He fights our battles when the enemy attacks. He gives us strength (Phil. 4:13). He forgives us when we sin, and He picks us up when we fall.
But sometimes as self-sufficient adults, sitting at our Father’s feet isn’t our first response to problems. Often, we try to fix them ourselves, possibly making things worse. We allow struggles to pester us with worry and anxious thoughts, just like the flying June bugs swarming around Iva. I learn so much watching Iva. Instead of allowing our frustration to build, we need to take a hint from Iva.
Run, right to our Father’s feet. God wants us to come to Him with every little thing. And He wants us to come again and again until something changes. He loves the sight of His children gazing into His face with expectancy.
Sweet friend, what troubles do you face today? Is it your job? Take it to your Father. Is it your health? Take it to your Father. Is it your family or friends? Take them to your Father. You get the idea. No matter what you face, God is our strong tower. He is our refuge from all the trials we face. Trust Him to shelter you today.
