Guide Dog Tale No One But God

But Jesus looked at them and said to them, ”With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

(Matthew 19:26 NKJV)

Do you have one tool that gets the job done better than another? Perhaps you prefer one baking pan over another for perfect cakes, cookies, or muffins? Then you’ll understand why I prefer Iva over my white cane.

Typically, Iva goes where I go, but on this particular Sunday she stayed at home. She was taking several medications for an anal gland infection, and the image of Iva tossing her cookies during church had come to mind. Just a few weeks earlier, a medication for a bee sting had resulted in an upset tummy. No guide dog handler wants this embarrassment in public, especially in church.

During the altar call, I tried making my way to the altar until I veered left. When I found the back of a pew, I knew my inability to walk a straight line still hindered me. Near the front of the church, it happened again. Thankfully, my pastor rushed to give me his hand and escorted me to the altar.

When I returned to my seat, I decided to let the cane rest against the wall to avoid getting sidetracked. This worked well until I reached the protruding chimney, but I got past it unscathed. My husband grabbed my hand as I whispered, “Iva’s irreplaceable.”

When Iva leads me, she keeps me straight, literally, and she takes me right to my favorite spot for prayer. The cane only keeps me from walking into something.

I thought of our key verse. We are limited in what we can do without God, but when we seek His help, all things are possible. Whether I am working on my computer or crossing a street, I need God.

The rich young ruler had departed unaware of his sin when Jesus proclaimed the difficulty for the rich entering heaven. Jesus’ disciples asked him who could make it to heaven. He replied, ”””With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” ((Matthew 19:26 NKJV)

Have you been praying for God to save a lost loved one? Have you preached until you were blue in the face? Have you beat them over the head with your Bible? Not advisable, but we do become frustrated. Have you given them the silent treatment or shut them out until they accept Jesus as their Savior? None of these techniques work. With man it is impossible. No one but God can soften their hard heart. No one but God can convict them of their sin and eternal doom. No one but God can set their hearts ablaze for the Lord.

We all have lost loved ones, but we can’t save their souls. Only God can do that. He is irreplaceable.

Today, I encourage you to stay down on your knees a little longer and pray for that soul. We are living in the last days. We can’t, but God can. No one but God.
