I wrote this just before going to Guiding Eyes for the Blind to get my beautiful black Lab, Iva. During my recovery, I read this, and I wish my faith was as strong now as it was then. It’s discouraging when you go through the day reminded of what you can’t do, but I need to remind myself of what God can do. Of what He has already done.
Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench
all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
Ephesians 6:16 NKJV
A small-town girl must travel alone to a big city to train with her new guide dog. The girl) woman) is me, and the only time I have flown was with my husband. Now, I have a connecting flight in a major airport before reaching my final destination at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Sounds pretty daunting. My shield of faith will be guarding me 24/7 from the enemy’s fiery darts. arrows of fearful thoughts and flames of “what-if” are already targeting me.
Let’s unpack our verse for a deeper understanding about utilizing this protective covering. Paul begins with “above all” which points to the significance of this all-important piece of armor.
Next, Paul instructs us to take up the shield of faith which indicates it is not always in use. It implies taking action. when utilized, the shield of faith will extinguish all darts, doused by our divine Defender.
I have committed to lift up my shield of faith, quenching each flaming dart immediately without a single consideration. I am firmly trusting God. This act of faith extends beyond New York. It Opens doors for future travel and speaking engagements.
Fear freezes, but faith frees. I can allow terrifying thoughts to immobilize me, but faith frees me from unhealthy thinking. I can anticipate my trip with the excitement of traveling to New York City and training with my dog.
God has honored my commitment to trust Him.
Before concluding this devotion, a friend of a friend has volunteered to meet me at the airport with the layover. I did not seek their help – just their prayers.
God is faithful! Faith frees us from the fear that freezes us. Christian, take up your shield and no longer allow the enemy to keep you from a faith-filled life.
Join me today, and let’s take up our shields together. If you want to read more about my adventures with learning to use a guide dog and our life together, check out the Guide Dog Tales devotionals below:

For me taking that first step is the hardest. Once I do, I am glad I did. Trust is not a strong point for me as I have been let down too many times so placing my trust in anyone is so hard God included.
That’s where the enemy wants you to be, and I know you know that, but don’t let him get the upper hand. Faith is trusting in God with no evidence of the outcome, and that gets tough at times.
