…casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

(2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV)

Terrorists no longer need planes. They can mow people over using a truck. The police who normally keep us safe are now being targeted, ambushed and killed. It can happen anytime and anywhere. Public bathrooms have become a hiding place for sexual predators. Our world no longer feels safe, and that frightens us.

Fear paralyzes us, keeping us from moving forward for Christ while it hinders us from achieving our dreams. It is one of Satan’s weapons. However, weapons may be formed against us, but they will not prosper (Is. 54:17 NKJV).

How can we control our phobias? It’s natural for humans to be apprehensive at times. However, fear can be fed, or it can be starved. If you set food out nightly, the local stray cat will continue visiting and possibly take up residence on your doorstep. But if you never feed him, he will look for food elsewhere.

Our trepidations work the same way. Here are some ways I have found to gain victory over the anxieties which burden us.

Take every thought captive. Runaway thoughts can cause as much damage as a runaway train. Do not allow your thoughts to wander to the worst possible scenario or the “what ifs”. Be careful about the thoughts you entertain.

Put your mind on God. Trust His promises. Memorize Scripture. Saturate your mind with God’s Word, sermons and gospel music.

Spend quality time in prayer. We can never pray enough. This time will result in a life ruled with peace rather than panic.

We do not have to be fear-controlled, but God-controlled. We do not feed fear, but starve it. Spiritual battles are waged in our hearts and minds, but victory is found down on our knees.

Lord Jesus, You have told us, “Do not be afraid,” but there are times when it consumes us. Help our minds stay focused on You. Deliver us from our fears and wrap us in Your perfect peace. Amen.

DIG DEEPER

“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 NKJV

HIKING THE TRAIL

This is one of my favorite verses about fear. What verses comfort you? Write them down and leave them in places where you are likely to read them.
