Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.”
4 So when the Lordsaw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
Exodus 3:3-4 NKJV
Since childhood, we knew the story of Moses and the burning bush, but let’s dig into the treasure chest of Scripture to reach what we need today as adults.
Moses was having an ordinary day, tending his father-in-law Jethro’s sheep. Suddenly, he noticed a strange phenomenon; a burning bush. The fire wasn’t unusual in that area, but the bush wasn’t being consumed by the fire. Leaves still clung to branches which hadn’t burned. This was supernatural. How often do we encounter the supernatural on a typical day? Maybe more often than we take notice.
Moses took a second look. When God had Moses’ attention, He spoke. God waited until Moses showed an interest in the blazing bush before speaking. He called out Moses’ name.
“Here I am.” Just the response God wants to hear from all of us. The Lord warned Moses:
Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.”(Exodus 3:5)
Moses saw the supernatural. He was drawn to it. After hearing God speak to him from the bush, Moses drew closer. But Moses wasn’t prepared to step onto holy ground, and neither are we.
God told Moses to remove his sandals. After tending sheep, his sandals were coated with dust and debris. Not that his feet were much cleaner, but the removal of the sandals represents preparedness.
On Mount Sinai, God makes it clear that the Israelites cannot rush into His presence. God is holy. We should show awe and reverence in the presence of God Almighty. Is there a matter between you and someone else? Resolve it before you worship. Are your thoughts cluttered with the cares of the world? Put them to rest. Are your troubles consuming you? Lay them on the altar and do business with God.
Isn’t God everywhere? At all places and at all times? Yes, He surely is, but we aren’t talking about God’s omnipresence. We need to be in His manifest presence, the moving of the Holy Spirit.
After experiencing His awesome presence, I am ruined. No longer will church as normal do. Some folks hunger and thirst for as much of God as they can get. Some step back.
In my new book, Eyes of Faith: Winning the battle Between Our Feelings and Our Faith, I describe the transformation that occurs when we renew our minds (Rom. 12:2). This change is necessary to take control of our thoughts. Ruling over our feelings rather than our feelings ruling over us.
Radical change occurs when we are radically seeking the presence of God.
When we notice the supernatural. When we turn to take a closer look. When we hear the Lord speak, and when we answer, “Here I am.” With honor, we enter into the holy presence of God. We sense it with all our being.
Then we enter in. We release all reign of our lives to God. We say, “Have Your will, Lord.” We sense His power, represented by fire in Scripture. We take the authority He has given us, and we take control.
No longer will we be overpowered by fear and worry. No longer will anxiety toy with us. No longer will the devil make us feel weak.
Friend, if you are seeking to radically change your life, get radical with God. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you. Be willing to say “Yes!” Yes, to God and no to your emotions. Allow your faith to overcome your feelings. Prepare yourself, because you are about to step on holy ground.
