Are We Following God’s Plan or a Good Plan?

And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:4 NKJV)

Have you ever experienced one of those light bulb moments where suddenly something makes more sense than ever before? You’ve heard it before, but this time a one-hundred-watt bulb just came on. I experienced that at a recent writers and speakers conference.

While answering a question, the speaker said two words: Signature message. Having one message that defined me was what I needed, and what I lacked.

Prior to Covid, I had spoken at only a few women’s events, but I had filled in on Sunday mornings for several preachers. You can’t repeat one message over and over when you do that. I was doing a good thing and a godly thing, but not God’s thing for me. All along my heart’s desire centered around women’s ministry. That’s where the signature message God gave me fits like a glove.

The men who built the Tower of Babel thought they were doing a good thing, but rebellion against God fueled their energy. They sought to make a name for themselves and become an unconquerable force. They would have accomplished everything they desired, except God came down and scattered them by giving them different languages, disunifying them and the first act of humanism in history.

Where does all your energy and efforts go? You might be doing a good thing. You might even be doing a godly thing, but is it God’s thing for you? Have you been sidetracked by something good, but it hasn’t brought you the great things God wants you to accomplish?

Sometimes, God has to reach down and help us when we get sidetracked. In my case, God moved me from one church to another, so He could position me to realize the time had come to turn down the fill-in invitations and fulfill my dream to minister to an audience of hurting women.

Unlike the builders of Babel, you probably aren’t in rebellion against God. You may be doing the good thing, but check in with God. Ask the hard question: is this Your plan for me, Lord?

When we center our efforts on God’s precise plan for us, like the tower builders, we will become an unconquerable force for God, doing the good thing and doing God’s thing.

Heavenly Father, show me Your plan for my life with a confirmation that I am on track for the good things You have planned for me. I am a willing vessel, and unlike the builders of the Tower of Babel, I want You to guide me. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

Is there a dream in your heart you haven’t quite reached? Is that the dream God wants you to accomplish?

instead of what you have settled for?
