I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(Romans 8:38-39 NKJV)

Have you ever doubted God’s love for you? Maybe you don’t realize just how much He loves you. Do you look around and see nothing to convince you of God’s love? Have you ever entertained the thought that God loves others, but not you? You don’t feel you are good enough for God to love.

In 1967, Marvin Gaye released the hit song, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The chorus said,

“Ain’t no mountain high enough.

Ain’t no valley low enough.

Ain’t no river wide enough,

To keep me from getting to you, babe.” *

Sadly, we have found that human love can stop right in its tracks. Maybe the love of a parent, sibling, or husband has grown cold, but God’s love is unstoppable.

Look at our verses today. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Not death or life. Not angels or demons. Not height or depth. Not any created being. And not our sin.

David was a man after God’s own heart. Yet, he committed adultery after he looked upon the beautiful Bathsheba. He tried to cover up that sin when he learned about her pregnancy by ordering the murder of Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah. David repented, and yes, God took David behind the woodshed. Yes, Israel reaped the consequences of their king’s sin, but God never stopped loving David.

Friends may come and go. Family members might abandon us, but God is always our one constant. He will never leave us, nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). We will disappoint Him. We will fail Him. We might even anger Him, but His love is greater than our sin.

Perhaps you are suffering now, and you wonder how a God with an incomprehensible love could allow the tragedies in your life.

Suffering is not the thermometer by which we measure God’s love.

Actually, God’s love will become even more evident in your suffering. When we hold on to faith, His love shines brightest in the dark

I have witnessed the evidence of His amazing love in storms more than in fair weather. During my husband’s battle with leukemia, I shuddered to think what could happen, but God miraculously healed. During my dramatic loss of sight, God showered me with His divine grace during every braille lesson. During my bouts with depression, God kept me from taking my life.

I can’t explain why God allows sleepless, tear-filled nights, but I cannot explain the boundless love of God either. I’m not going to ask you to take my word for it. Instead, I ask you to trust His Word. Try Him because He is faithful.

Lord God, help me trust in Your love. Thank You for loving me so much that You sacrificed Your Son so You can spend eternity with me. Amen.

Read Jeremiah 31:3 NKJV

The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.
