TREASURES IN THE DARK
For you will light my lamp;
The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. – Ps. 18:28
I was turning off the Christmas lights one night when I noticed that I had missed a small battery powered nativity. As I picked it up to turn off the switch, I noticed a beauty about it that I had never seen before. Possibly it’s because I’m quite visually impaired, but I now noticed that it was changing colors. I saw something beautiful and different in the total darkness.
That reminded me of something I had heard preached before. You can only see the stars at night and it is during the darkest times of our lives, the trials that God enlightens us with something that we could never see in the light. Think back to some of the darkest times of your life since salvation. Do you remember a special blessing or time of prayer? Or maybe it was something that God taught you during that trial?
In the darkness, I have felt God’s love and grace more than ever before. I have felt His strength flow through my veins as I accomplished challenges that I considered to be impossible. It is in the dark that our faith grows, especially when you are in a situation where no one but God can help. These are the reasons that we can say with James, “…Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” (James 1:2).
