When We Don’t Understand

By Carolyn Dale Newell

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

Luke 2:13-14 NKJV

What an amazing sight the shepherds beheld the night Jesus Christ was born. Never before and never again has anything of this magnitude happened. Angels filled the heavens giving glory to God. He had stepped down from His throne in heaven to humbly lie in a manger. Immanuel, God with us had come to earth.

The Angels understood the magnificence of it all. They could not understand why God who is holy, holy, holy would sacrifice so much for dirty rotten sinners. They knew His great love for man, but they did not understand salvation (1 Pet. 1:10-12).

In spite of what they could not comprehend, they praised. They glorified. They did not need to know everything. They just knew God.

We can gather two things from this. First, we understand. We have the entire story of redemption written in Scripture. Jesus left the glories of heaven to live as a Man. He died so that we may be saved. We know, but how often do we offer praise?

Next, there are many things we don’t understand, and like the hosts of heaven, we still must give God glory. I don’t understand why loved ones are suffering so close to Christmas. I don’t understand why relationships are shattered during the season of peace on earth. I don’t understand why certain trials come into our lives, arousing fear and stress. I don’t understand why our nation’s leaders don’t realize the harm in their legislation.

Each of us is in some situation that doesn’t make complete sense to us, but it makes perfect sense to God. Trust Him and praise Him this Christmas season. Faith is praising God even when we don’t understand. Especially when we don’t understand, we should praise Him.

Christmas is about You. No matter what goes on in our lives, we should praise You each day of the year. You are worthy! Amen.

Read Luke 2:8-14 and 1 Pet. 1:10-12.

What doesn’t make sense in your life? Trust God because He knows the complete story. Now give Him praise.
