A Peaceful Christmas

By Carolyn Dale Newell

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Is. 9:6 NKJV

Peace is a rare commodity. We can’t find it in the world, and most homes lack peace. How can there be peace on earth during the busiest time of the year? It’s crunch time, and my decorating is not done. I haven’t wrapped the first present. Illness and life crises have demanded our time.

Several years ago, I had strep throat just before Christmas. Decorating was complete, so I was able to rest. However, inactivity is not good when you have bursitis and arthritis. I woke up thirsty one night, and I went to the kitchen. As I began to get up from my chair, severe pain sat me back down. That was the beginning of a two-week bout of excruciating pain. Getting in and out of bed became tedious. At times, walking was nearly impossible. The only relief was found in hot showers and lying perfectly still.

I couldn’t cook Christmas dinner, shop, or attend Christmas plays. I watched my husband work, fix dinner, and try to do Christmas with his family. I watched Christmas movies, listened to Christmas music and talked to Jesus. It was the most peaceful Christmas I ever had.

I was incapable of keeping the busy Christmas schedule that we self-inflict upon ourselves stealing our peace on earth. I had to let some things go. When we release, we will find peace. I never wished for that type of pain, but through it, I found peace.

This year, there won’t be Christmas cards. Some decorating may go undone. I am celebrating the birth of my Prince of Peace.

Friend, do you find yourself overwhelmed with Christmas busyness? What tradition can you let go, just for this year, in order to have peace on earth?

Christmas is all about You. Not the tree, not the gifts, not even homemade fudge. Help us keep You at the center of all we do. Help us have peace on our little part of this earth. Thank You and amen.

Read the Christmas story in Luke 2:1-40.

What can you release in order to have peace this Christmas? How can Jesus be at the center of your celebration?
