Stand Up and Stand Out
By Carolyn Dale Newell
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him
Who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
1 Pet. 2:9 (KJV)
On our annual beach trip, we met an odd bird hanging out with the seagulls. His larger size gave him an advantage when it came to snapping up food. The fishermen hated him because he dragged a bait cooler about 20 feet up the beach. By the time it was retrieved, the bird was pecking at the tab to open it. He seemed to know how to open the cooler, and he was determined to get the fish inside. He was a peculiar creature, but he possessed strength and wisdom.
This unusual bird stood out because his appearance and behavior were different. People try not to stand out in a crowd, but our verse calls Christians a “peculiar people”. Think what the world would look like if we had that bird’s determination, a drive to witness, serve, and obey God.
