GOD USES ORDINARY PEOPLE
By Carolyn Dale Newell
And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of
Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah,
Also of David and Samuel and the prophets:
Heb. 11:32 (NKJV)
It is not surprising to find David and Samson among the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11. However, Barak and Gideon were fearful and their faith was weak.
In Judges 4, God commanded Barak to fight against Israel’s enemies. Even though God had promised him the victory, Barak would not go unless Deborah, Israel’s judge, accompanied him.
Judges 6 introduces Gideon while he is threshing wheat hiding in the wine press from the Midianites. Yet the Angel of the Lord called Gideon a “mighty man of valor” (v. 12). Gideon follows the Lord’s command to tear down his father’s altar to Baal and build an altar to God. Gideon is so fearful of his father and the men of the city that he waits for the cover of darkness to build it (v. 27).
Next, God tells Gideon that he will deliver the Midianites into his hand. Gideon lacked faith to believe God so he begins testing God. He puts out a fleece of wool and asks God to let the fleece be soaking wet with dew at dawn, but the ground would be dry. Even after this, Gideon test God a second time with the fleece. This time the fleece would remain dry and the ground would be wet with dew.
Do you ever feel like Gideon or Barak – fearful and doubting? We all feel that way at times, but it is encouraging to know that God uses fearful people like Gideon and Barak. It is comforting to know that He can use each one of us, even with our faults. No matter how weak we feel, God can strengthen us and use us as He did with these heroes of faith.
Thank You for these examples of ordinary people who did extraordinary things with Your strength and might. It reminds us that You can use each of us as long as we are willing. Here I am, Lord. Use me for Your glory. Amen.
Read Judges 6:11-40.
HIKING THE TRAIL
In what ways has God called you to serve Him? Perhaps you are a writer, a singer, or a mother. What fears and doubts do you have? Tell them to God, and trust Him to strengthen you.
