Give Thanks

In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thes. 5:18 (NKJV)

Christians have so many reasons to be thankful. Jesus Christ came to this earth to give us abundant, eternal life. He suffered persecution and died so that we may receive forgiveness for our sins and spend eternity in heaven. Sometimes we don’t consider the indescribable depths of His love.

The child of God can also thank His heavenly Father for so many blessings. In the U.S., we still have the freedom to go to church and own a Bible. We have been blessed with jobs, health, homes and loved ones.

What if you lose these freedoms? What if you have lost your job or your home? How can you be thankful when your health is failing or you’ve lost a loved one? Christians will still be thankful because God is their comfort. He pours out His mercy and grace upon us. Even in the worst circumstances, the Holy Spirit gives us joy and peace. Most importantly, Christians can be thankful because God is in control of all things.

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose.” (Rom. 8:28). While bad things are not good in themselves, God works them together with other circumstances to achieve His purpose. It is like a recipe for bread. The individual ingredients do not taste good by themselves, but once you mix them together the end result is delicious. We know that God is achieving a purpose that we may not understand until we reach heaven.

Finally, we can be thankful that as God’s children, He will bring us through these hard times. He will never leave us or forsake us (Heb. 13:5). God has commanded us to be thankful in all things. So let’s have an attitude of gratitude.

Dear Lord,
May we just thank You today? We take so many things for granted. Forgive us, Father, and never let us forget to be thankful for salvation and all Your many blessings. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read Rom. 1:21 and 2 Tim. 3:1-5. What do these verses tell us about being unthankful?

Look for ways to be thankful even in the worst circumstances. What are some things that you can be thankful for today?
